Readers’ Favourite YAOI Books

A few weeks ago Tam did a post about YAOI here. There was a lot of interest by readers and so many titles of favourite books listed on the post that Ingrid volunteered, by raising her hand in the air, :) when I asked for someone to put a list together of your favourite YAOI reads. So here is Ingrid’s first attempt, with Tam’s help,  at a list of Readers’ Favourite YAOI Books. This list will be updated with your input every 3 – 6 months to keep it current.

Because there were so many titles Ingrid did some editing. You will also note that there is a separate section for anime.

Thanks to all the readers who sent in their favourite books – we couldn’t have done this without you. :)

From here on, all the narrative as well as the titles were put together by Ingrid

**********************

The list is in alphabetical order by mangaka ( artist and writer of manga) with some of the recommended reads. Listing all of the available books simply would be too much as some of these writers have produced a lot of work.

Zetsuai and Bronze (Everlasting Love): As with all others these are in bookform too. But I did not like the artwork so I never read them but in anime it works much better.

  • Thanks Larissa. There is way more yaoi out there and some is just hysterical. So outrageous, we tried to put some quality in this list.
Maybe we can do a list with the most outrageous works as well sometime.

  • Thanks for compiling the list. I see some titles which are new to me…

When I saw that cover of Misaki and Akihiko, I just had to smile. :-)

  • Very nice list, brought me even out of lurkdom. However, you might like to add Kazuma Kodaka’s “Kizuna” (one of my favourites: romantic, funny, some action, drama) and perhaps her “Kiss me, teacher”, too.
Furthermore; Satosumi Takagushi’s “Shout out loud” (thoughful that one, was a recommendation by Jules Jones) and Shinri Fuwa – her guys are just beautiful and the stories aren’t bad either.

  • Thanks Iris. In a few months we will see if we need to update this list. It is an ungoing project. So we will keep your recommendations in mind.

  • Love Mode by Shimizu Yuki is my favourite yaoi of all times. Thanks for including it in the list 😀 Though I don’t get what’s so cool in Junjou Romantica. It reminds me of the popularity that accompanied Maki Murakami’s Gravitation. Everyone seemed to know it at the time though not many remember it now. I wonder if a similiar thing will happen to JR…

I had read the recommendation for Mika Sadahiro’s Under Grand Hotel 1-3 (contemp) in the previous thread and wondered why it didn’t make to this list… Add it in the next update please :)

    Also check out those yaoi:
Satoru Kannagi and Yukine Honami: Rin! 1-3 (contemp)
You Higuri: Ludwig II 1-3 (historical)
Naono Bohra: everything *__* (great stories, lots of emotions; worth bearing the ‘dirty hands and feet’ shading)
    Yamato Nase: Chintsubu (it’s hilarious!)
Kaori Yuki: Boys Next Door (contemp; only in jap and german)
    Touko Kawai: CUT (contemp)
Koh Akizuki and Sei Gotou: Fujimi Orchestra (contemp; a classic)

  • Ingrid and Tam, this is so helpful! I know absolutely nothing about yaoi and I should know at least a little if I’m going to broaden my knowledge of the m/m genre in general. Of course, I never know where to start, but this is a list that I can refer to in the future when I start putting my toe into the water. 😉 I’m pleased to see that the only yaoi I’ve ever read (The Crimson Spell) made the list!

  • Of course it did Val. It is THE best work out there if you are into the explicit stuff. And we pervy lot do like our yaoi explicit 😀

  • Please consider adding Haru wo Daiteita to the list. It’s a fantastic anime and can be seen via youtube, I believe, in four parts.

  • I absolutely love Youka Nitta. But I had no idea Haru Wo Daiteita can be found on youtube. I’m heading over there right now. I love the series and was crushed when it was discontinued.

    Nadja

    • most of the animes are available on Aarinfantasy Yaoi forum. They have a d/load section too 😀

  • Glad to be of service Nadja :) The dud about watching them on youtube that you can only watch short pieces and have to carefully watch that you watch all the episodes parts in the right order.

Thanks for the link up Miranda.

Thanks Ellie, that is a gross over sight! Even more because I have watched all the episodes too.
There is so much stuff out there that it is hard to keep up.

  • Subara, I think it is the humour in Junjou that catches me every time I read them but even more when I watch the anime.
Like the first 1.20 min in this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHcLsIp00ok
It is about Usagi san wanting his sausages cut up like squids. And Aikawa san (his editor) going hysterical, as she does most of the time.

  • So many of my favorites on this list!

    Please consider, for updates:

Saika Kunieda, FUTURE LOVERS — a sweet, funny contemporary with more of a nod to the realistic problems of gay life than most yaoi (2 vol)

    and if you’re including manwha:

Hajin Yoo, TOTALLY CAPTIVATED — okay, it’s way over the top, but this contemporary tale of love among Korean mobsters starts out hilarious, takes a turn for the heart-wrenching, and ends up surprisingly touching and tender (6 vol)

  • Just wanted to let you know this post totally turned me on to yaoi, and I’m addicted now. Junjou Romantica is by far my favorite, but I wanted to recommend Antique Bakery. It’s a manga (and doujinshi by the original artist), anime, and live-action Korean movie. It’s very funny and has a little mystery mixed in.

    • Hi Kerry
Ingrid is away but I know that when she returns she will be talking to you about your recs. I’m not an expert on YAOI but she and Tam and a few of the other readers blog about it a lot. :)

  • Nice list. I definitely agree with anything by NAONO Bohra, YAMANE Ayano, MIYAMOTO Kano, and TAKANAGA Hinako.

I also like Subaru’s suggestion of CUT (and NAONO Bohra).

I would also add “I Want to be Naughty!” and its sequels by SAKURAGA Mei (I love Kirai ja Naikedo), and “Sono Kuchibiru ni Yoru no Tsuyu” by FUKAI Youki, one of the best psychological yaois I’ve ever read.

If you like versatiles, they can be hard to find, but try some of SADAHIRO Mika’s works.

And if you want something less explicit, try YUMEKA Sumomo’s shounen-ai works.

  • Ah, nice list! I’ve been following your m/m recs, actually, but I never noticed this.

Have you tried works by Sakuraga Mei? Particularly the Warui, Kirai/Koi and the Mujihi series. The characters in all three series are linked somehow. So far, out of all the titles and mangakas I follow (believe me, I’ve read a lot!), Sakuraga really is one of my favourites. Her drawing style is amazing (maybe because I’m very particular when it comes to human anatomy, haha) and her story lines are not bad at all.

But if you want really good plot, with surprising depth to them and really interesting characters, I’d suggest works by Sumomo Yumeka. Her works are usually bittersweet and more psychological, revolving around life and such. Her drawing style is rather unique, I really love it!

I’m not really that much of a fan, but Hotaru Odagiri is usually adored by fans because of her characters (and drawing skills, obviously), like the one of her latest titles, Invisible Boys. I think IB is okay, but there’s one in which she collaborated with another author. The series are called “Only the Ring Finger Knows”. I prefer reading the manga rather than the novels, particularly because the writing is not that great, but the plot is worth it, I’d say. And you’ll come to love the two main characters as they go through obstacle after obstacle.

Finally! This is a manhwa artist/author, but she really is my favourite, Yoo Ha Jin. I’m forever grateful to her for writing Totally Captivated. That has got to be one of the best yaoi titles ever existed! I mean, yes, the story could be a bit over the top sometimes, but most yaoi in general are. I guess you could say this is as good as it could get. Great drawing and anatomy, very interesting (and sexy) characters, great plot, good balance of angst and fluff. Just, amazing!

  • You missed out one of the most popular in the yaoi genre.

Sensitive Pornograph by Ashika Sakura is both a manga that features 6 short stories and an anime that features the two most explicit of the set. (Not sure if allowed to mention it here)but there is actually a Yaoi forum called Aarinfantasy where all anime’s can be watched and discussions abound about all forms of mxm related Yaoi stuff 😀 Added to that Mangafox has an extensive collection of yaoi and boy’s love that can be read online. Hope this helps with your listings Ingrid! 😀
