Do You Watch Gay Porn?

It’s been a while since I posted a poll and I thought this would be a good way to start off the new website.:)

I couldn’t sleep last  night and was reading some of my “saved” articles and came across one that I had set aside  a few months ago  because I wanted to do a poll on this subject. So here’s the question. Do.You.Watch.Gay.Porn? Many of you will lie through your teeth and say “no” while your nose grows longer. :) However, I know that some of us do watch gay porn and will continue denying we do until we drop and go to the happy hunting ground, where we can watch even more gay porn.  :) You might be part of this group of deniers. If so, you don’t need to read any further because you’re not interested in the topic. Right? However if, like me, you admit to watching, why do you do so? Is it the kink factor? Personally I love to see two hot men getting it on, and the guys in gay porn are usually buff, not like those in regular porn whose only attribute is having the biggest dick in town, never mind the pot bellies and skinny legs.

The next question is – Do you think that gay porn is an extension of reading M/M books or gay fiction? Some of the books are pretty raunchy and if you like to visualize (most men prefer pictures to words) you could probably imagine yourself starring in a movie with the protagonists in an M/M romance or gay fiction book. It seems that women don’t watch a lot of straight porn because they are obviously made by men for men and the women in those movies are creepy looking with fake boobs that are so big they threaten their balance. But gay porn is much richer and better quality stuff and some straight women and lots of gay men find it more enjoyable I’m told. According to the latest research, some straight couples as well as straight men now admit to watching man on man action between the sheets.

Do you think that the recent explosion of gay porn is directly connected to ease of access? You don’t have to go to your neighbourhood video store any more to purchase a DVD  and have the store clerk recognise you. Now you can just order online and download your purchase or watch free gay porn because anything is available on the ‘net.

In an article posted by Metro.co.uk the author, Lisa Scott, tried to explain this trend

brokeback-mountain-posters“Watching Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal rolling around in a tent in Ang Lee’s groundbreaking Brokeback Mountain had knees trembling all over the world. Many of those lustily quivering weren’t gay romantics but women. ‘Who knew man-on-man action could be so beautiful?’ they cried.

Although some women have been in on the secret for a while (Japan’s female population lap up boy-love comics while slash fiction, which turns two male characters from cult TV shows into lovers, is mainly for women), us British girls have been lagging behind. Until now.”

‘Which is where male gay porn comes in,’ says Prof Clarissa Smith, author of One For The Girls!, a book about women’s fascination with porn.’It’s a holiday in someone else’s experience,’ explains Smith.

Leading gay fiction author James Lear, … named Writer of the Year at the prestigious Erotic Awards, has seen a sharp rise in British women getting to grips with boy-only sex. His first book, The Back Passage (ahem) was more popular with women than men and his new novel, The Secret Tunnel, looks like it will repeat the same success.

‘As one female fan put it: “One penis is good, two even better,”‘ he explains. ‘They fancy men, they’re turned on by men and so they’re even more turned on by men with men – it’s like “man squared”.’

Asked to explain this phenomenon of women watching gay porn, Lear said It’s even more basic than that. ‘Female readers don’t need a central female character to identify with; they get off on men as men get off on women, appreciating their bodies, enjoying graphic descriptions of sex and objectifying men. They love the idea of a randy gay man seducing other men.’

Brokeback Mountain opened all kinds of doors to women in terms of identifying with male/male characters in romantic relationships in movies and since then the market for gay movies seems to be in the stratosphere, with movies like Shelter which has a huge following. I want to be clear, these two examples are not gay porn movies just gay movies (my gay movies don’t have pretty pictures on the package):)

Is it mostly women who are buying and watching gay porn or do gay AND straight men get off on gay porn as well?

Back to my original question. Do.You.Watch.Gay.Porn? Guys and gals, gay or straight :) especially those of you who make up my large contingent of lurkers, I would appreciate your comments if you’re brave enough to admit you enjoy this dastardly pastime. This is just a fun  poll to see how far we’ve come, or not.

  • I’m like Ingrid – I’ve checked out the clips, but my husband is my computer support guy, and I’m too afraid he’ll run across the cookies to actually go as far as downloading anything. I’m not even sure he’d mind, but just the thought of having such an embarrassing conversation is holding me back.

  • Yes, I do. Not the pretty boy stuff though, the hairless European/Hispanic boys, you can keep them. I think the husband would be surprised at the amount of gay dungeon porn I have stashed away.

  • Q. Do you watch gay porn?

    A. Honey, I have an entire folder for it on my computers! I got a new laptop and an hour after booting it up popped its cherry and downloaded a gay porn flick to it. I even have a fave actor (Logan McCree anyone? Rawr, google that shit if you don’t know. Now you know.). I’m not ashamed of it, not even when an ex once stumbled upon my ‘writing research’ folder and got an eyeful lol.

For me, yes, it was an extension of reading and writing m/m, though really there’s very little similarity between what I like to read/write and gay porn. Gay porn is pretty much just as cheesy and poorly done as straight porn, but I’m much more forgiving of it because it’s two usually good-looking, fit guys. For the most part they tend to try to make it appear both guys are equally into it (not always though, the unexcited bottom is a curse in gay porn…a woman can fake it but nothing is less arousing than a pretty bottom boy who’s moaning and panting but is totally flaccid)

The main issue I have with gay porn is that, as would be expected, it’s marketed to gay men. Hence it’s very much like straight porn marketed to men…men want different things than women do as far as what turns them on. I’d absolutely love to see a ‘Gay porn for women by women’ company hit the industry, because some semi-decent dialogue and a good dash of romance added onto the already hot men would be pretty awesome.

  • My name’s Clare and I watch gay porn. There we are, all said and done :). Very happy to declare myself. I’d watch more if I had the opportunity, but I don’t personally think it’s appropriate to watch when I have the family around me, so my ‘me’ time is limited. That goes for straight porn too. (oh, and anime series as well, but that’s because the menfolk in my house find them hysterical, not scandalous…LOL)

I don’t really think it’s necessarily an extension of reading m/m, or even a cousin. But then there’s porn and there’s porn, isn’t there? LOL Like Shelter, the movie you feature in the post, which is one of the loveliest films I’ve ever watched, whether gay or not. And then there are movies like Every Poolboy’s Dream with the delectable, not-known-for-his-acting-skills Brent Corrigan, that’s another genre altogether, and enjoyable for its own merits. Some things give me inspiration for writing, some of them reflect m/m books I’ve read, some are just a separate entertainment on their own!

Yes, I think online accessibilty is a huge influence on the buying for both porn and erotic fiction. If not the hugest! It’s opened up so much opportunity for the buying public, especially people who spend a large amount of time at home.

And is it just girls watching gay porn? Well, I confess that’s all I know *lol*. But a gay friend has happily shared some of his videos and books with me. Admittedly, they were more Brent than Shelter, but I think that reflects the male approach to leisure activities than anything specific to gay porn.

Hope I covered all the points, I’ve run out of time for online surfing at the moment and can’t go back to check LOL.
    :)

  • “And then there are movies like Every Poolboy’s Dream with the delectable, not-known-for-his-acting-skills Brent Corrigan”

I have a good few of Brent’s films, he’s one of my faves simply because he doesn’t fall into that ‘flaccid bottom’ curse. He’s always ever so happy to be right where he is lol.

    • Okay, I don’t have any of his movies but I’ve seen some longer clips and he is cute as a button and as you said Fae, happy to be there. LOL

    • Okay that’s it. I need my own place so I can order these movies. Somehow I don’t think my brother will appreciate gay porn…

    • Arrgh Fae, you express it so well! LOL. That’s exactly Brent’s appeal, and as I tend more toward the twink-look, he’s my perfect 10 *hehe*. It was great when he got that tattoo…
Now you’re leading me *well* astray…

  • Oh yeah. Men doin’ the dirty helps me sleep. 😉

It does bug me, though, that so much gay porn is so mechanical. Stick this here; stick that there; pump away. I’d appreciate SOME build-up and a modicum (no pun) of acting ability, but that preference is obviously the result of both the woman and the writer in me. Porn is always more effective for me if the actors seem fully involved in what they’re doing. Too often, they don’t.

That said, anybody have any recommendations? :-)

    • KZ, you’re right. (and how good to see you, I’ve been an absent pal…*smooch*).
I like some dialogue with my porn – is that so greedy?! – and there’s often very little of that. It is, indeed, the usual procession of events – kiss, suck#1, suck#2, tab A in slot B etc. But then, that’s porn per se, isn’t it?? It’s not something that is progressively exciting or challenging. It just does what it says on the can. Or DVD case, whatever.
      :)

      • Yo, CLARE! I’ve been lost in the real world for a while, too. Spent the last several days helping friends clean the grease out of a tavern they bought.

I’ve not even seen kissing in gay porn. It’s usually humpity-hump beneath glazed eyes in ventriloquist-dummy faces. I actually like the amateur stuff better; at least the home-style vid crowd are really into what they’re doing…even if they’re doing themselves. (Gotta love ’em!)

  • I have it, watch it, enjoy it.

Same with bi or straight – some’s good, some’s so bad you can’t stop laughing, but overall, at least with gay porn, very few leave their socks and shoes on while doing the nasty.

For research, mind you. Strictly for research…
    ahem.

  • NOTE

I was thinking of listing a few “safe” sites where you don’t get viruses so that those of you who are newbies can check out the action to see if you like it, without having to pay for it. Of course that doesn’t resolve Alex’s problem since her husband is her IT technician.:)

Those of you who would like to share can email me at jessewave@gmail.com with the names of your favourite sites and I’ll list them on the website, under a pseudonym, of course. I already know Ally’s *g*

  • I can handle socks, hey, sometimes your feet get cold, but its the shoes that get me. How in the hell do you get your pants off over big honking boots? Do you take your boots off, then your pants and put the boots back on? What’s up with that? I generally hate feet so I’d rather see a clean white sock (PLEASE let it be clean) than a gnarly man foot (any foot ewww). And please don’t lick his foot. *gag*

  • No, I don’t watch it. I don’t watch het porn, either. Or femslash porn. It’s just not my thing. Honestly, I’m not interested in watching random people, no matter how pretty, have sex with other random people.

If I know the characters and care about them, fine. Sure. Then I’ll read about them. Or write about them. But just watching sex and nothing but sex…no. I’d think I’d die of embarrassment.

  • Whoo, I loves me the gay porn.

I agree with what several of us have said already, Ally and Tam and Clare and KZ among others, that what really turns me on is watching the two guys connect with each other. Which means eye contact, kissing, talking that doesn’t sound stilted, lovemaking sounds that don’t sound stilted. I’m looking for a genuine, “I’m SO into this!” reaction when I watch.

    (TMI alert)
And I think that’s what I always hated about straight porn. You’d watch a guy do something really lame (like shake his head around between a woman’s legs when he’s going down on her like a dog with a chew toy) and have her all fakey moan and groan as if it felt good. Eew. It doesn’t feel good. And the chick moaning and groaning only makes our men try out the lame moves on us!

It’s not the fake boobs that gross me out so much as the fake fingernails. I must have too much of an eye for detail.

I would be all over a gay porn for straight women site. There are certain things, like the mechanicalness of some gay porn, or like the really icky too-much-tongue or tongue-not-in-mouth kissing, that turns me off in gay porn. (But then they’ll do something really pervy and I dig it. So who knows?)

  • “That said, anybody have any recommendations?”

Honestly, Anything with Logan McCree or Brent Corrigan. For Logan, ‘Ink Storm’ is my fave if only for the vampire-ish scene towards the end. For Brent it’s ‘Schoolboy Crush’. If you like scruffy, tattooed bad boys, go for Logan’s films. If you like smooth, pretty and eager twinky boys, go for Brent.

  • Of course I watch gay porn. I’m a perv. I prefer the books because I can visual the men however I want lol. But yes I watch porn. What you should do Wave is get a list of great gay porn movies. I’m always on the hunt for good porn and in the plethora of BAD porn, even by studios I like, I’d love to have a list that others contribute to from their own experience.

Or does that open the door too much? 😀

  • I absolutely watch porn — gay, straight, bi — and have since I was a late teen in the mid eighties when the new video (VHS) store opened up the street and they had…gasp!…a “room.” Oh my! My friends and I would go there and one would watch out for people we knew (like our parents!) and the rest would go in behind the curtain and pick a few out. And then pick out a few regular movies, too, just for appearances. *g* The we would smuggle them into our parents’ homes as none of us lived away at the time, go into the basement family rooms where the single VHS player was usually and watch it under cover of darkness. At first, we’d all laugh and joke about the cheesy lines and music. The basements were generally cool, even in summer, so we’d throw blankets over ourselves and after the laughter died down, well, hands got busy! No one would admit to it, though, LOL. Oh, and then came the time when my parents sat me down and said something like “So, we got a late notice on a rental from XX video store and it was porn. We just want you to know that it’s normal to watch that and all.” Embarrassment didn’t even cover it! Anyway, at the time, we could only get mostly straight films with some girl-on-girl action thrown in at times. My girl friends wanted to skip through those parts, my guy friends wanted to play in slo mo and several times over! I was with the guys, frankly, and I should have known then that the straight and narrow wasn’t for me! At the time I hadn’t seen any m/m films, and it was years before I did, for no other reason than I didn’t know they existed as it was pre-internet and my Western PA local video stores didn’t carry them. I remember seeing my first bi (f/m/m) on an old VHS my now partner had and that was it for me. Yum! Better than f/f! Now I definitely prefer m/m. I also read porn and have for a long time, but I didn’t start reading m/m (the books we read and review here) until about three years ago, so the porn definitely came first.
    *******
I agree with others that I am not a fan of obviously staged gay porn, and I can recall about a year ago finding a m/m video made somewhere in Eastern Europe (no one spoke English) where the bottom was actually crying in discomfort while trying to pull his flaccid peen off in at least the appearance of whacking off. Unfortunately, the tears and moans of not-joy made me stop the thing and take it back. Since then, I’ve tried to find more tasteful movies with some display of emotion and, for gods’ sake, the bottom able to be hard and actually come! Luckily I live in the Bay Area and it’s not too difficult to find, though most video stores around here still carry badly made, mass-produced crap. A local store — Good Vibrations — that has a few Bay Area locations and a busy online site has among it’s wall-length vibrator and dildo selection a large collection of very tasteful films for rent and purchase, and the majority of them are made by women for women, but mostly straight and f/f. They do have some m/m films, but not as many, though they are almost all goodies.
    *******
I also agree that the Internet has changed everything about porn, from access to what kinks get to film to sheer number of options. I have scanned some sites, but as an IT professional, I am concerned about viruses, adware and spyware. I run anti-spy and adware routinely and have found numerous gems lurking after being out on the Interwebz on sites. If I could get a list of safe sites, that would be fab.

  • I do watch gay porn, but for me it’s more “educational” because I don’t find it particularly arousing. I watch it mostly to get a better sense of what was going on in the stories when 2 guys were having sex. Helps me “picture” things. I like the visuals because they then make the stories “hotter” when in my head I insert the clip from the gay porn into the story with the characters as the two actors.

Because of that, I’m extremely selective because there needs to be something about the clip that makes it a good fit for a particular story or two, so my “collection” (such as it) is is very small.

  • I have to admit that I checked some out a couple years ago, but I think it was the worst or cheapest gay porn ever made it was done as badly as most straight porn ever.
Then one friday morning I happen to check this blog and yes because of “YOU” Wave I had to check this out again. With only a picture of Logan McCree on your site I had to check who that was and let’s just say he is the “Man”. And wow the movies he’s in are way better than what I checked back then.
And now I do understand the girls from Sex and the city…lol! Gay porn have guys like Logan McCree & Straight porn we have Ron Jeremy… The choice for me is really simple. lol!
Thanks again Wave for the discovery and please do bring back pictures of Logan, there are some out there that you can put on this site. 😉

    • Elayne
I do have lots of pics of Logan but unfortunately they’re full frontal and so I can’t post them – what would the parents of the little kiddies say?:) I don’t think there’s any comparison between Logan and Ron Jeremy. Is Ron still with us? I remember seeing him in straight porn decades ago.

  • Oh no, I can’t answer all of your comments. I was laughing hysterically at some of them. Maybe I’ll just summarize some of the main points in a couple of days, and PLEASE, if you know of safe sites either list them here or email me and I’ll figure out how to post them. Same for recommendations – please list actual names of the movies per Kassa’s suggestion. Who knew she was a perv like most of the rest of us??

    Tracey
    These are very bad people!

  • I love gay porn! I don’t consider Shelter porn, it’s gay romance; although I have to admit the love scene is pretty ridiculous as all they do is roll around on the bed. But kissing’s always hot! I do love the scenes afterwards with snapshots of the two together in bed, and just together. The only reason I have Netflix is to watch all the gay movies (not porn, obviously).

My daughter keeps laughing at the “gay porn” I read, since I probably have every m/m book ever written since 2006; I certainly haven’t shown her what real gay porn is. LOL I hide it in another folder. I got into gay porn because I read m/m; I wanted to see it in real life since I loved it in words. I’m very familiar with Brent, but I’ll have to go check out Logan for sure! And put me on the list to get the good sites. I’ll have to check my computer for the ones I watched; I think they were subscription that I joined for a month because I couldn’t find any good free ones. I’m definitely checking out Xtube…

I’m willing to start up a list of the good gay movies. I’ve watched many of them and have a list about 100 long waiting in Netflix. I’ll probably do it in amazon (under jenswan88).

    • Hi Jen
I just used Shelter as an example of a gay romance – I think I mentioned that it was definitely not porn. It’s just that some of the covers on my gay porn movies I can’t post on the site:)

If you can send me a copy of your movie list I would be happy to include it here. Would that be Jen’s Top and Bottom 100? :)

  • Wave can you please explain “I wish I could order more movies from the US but Canada Customs is very vigilant”. Customs on the phone are never able to explain anything to us and we don’t like surprise from gov. 😉

    • Elayne
Canada Customs is always on the lookout for porn entering Canada an confiscaes it, especially gay porn, on some flimsy trumped up excuse. There’s a site in Vancouver which sells regular porn but I don’t know if they sell gay porn as well.

  • Lynn
I’ll have to use you as a reference source and referral in future. Who knew I had this little treasure trove right here?:)

I’m sure there must be something like Gay Vibrations (sorry, you said Good Vibrations):) here except it’s probably in a part of town I don’t frequent, which is why I order online in most cases. I should get some recommendations from you as well since you certainly seem to know your stuff.*g*

I stick to mostly North American stuff rather than Eastern European porn but that’s just because of the sub titles.
